Celebrate the life of William W. Schaub, Chief Master Sergeant, United States Air Force

Friday, August 25, 2006

CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT WILLIAM SCHAUB

Chief Master Sergeant Bill Schaub passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2006.

At the time of his passing, he was serving proudly and happily in the United States Air Force as the Superintendent of the 341st Medical Group at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana; he had just days ago re-committed to continued service, telling his friends and co-workers that he loved his job, loved the people he worked with, and that he had the "best job in the Air Force Medical Service." He was far too young and happy to leave us. If you would like to share your thoughts or memories of Chief Schaub, please leave a comment here for his wife and family and friends to see. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 30, at Malmstrom Air Force Base.

Chief was one of the greatest people I've ever had the privilege of knowing. Malmstrom AFB was my first assignment as an officer, and Chief was always there with expert advise. Being so new, I have to admit, I took everything he said as the gospel. More than once Chief provided me with his counsel--this happened more often than not since our offices were right next to each other. I would always joke that they placed me next to Chief so I would have adult supervision. He made me feel better about myself, confident in my decisions, and proud to call him my friend. I'll never forget what you have done for me.

When Chief Schaub arrived at the 341st Medical Group I told him that I felt like he was a gift to us...we needed, I needed, an enlisted leader that everyone could look up to and respect, and Chief Schaub was that leader. More than that, he was a good man, and with good men and women working with you, everything is possible--and with Chief Schaub, we felt like we could do anything. He and Deb made an incredible team--and if the universe is just, which I believe it is, it's a team that will see itself at some point reunited again. I'm proud to have served with the Chief--I consider myself all the better for it. But that's the effect he had on others, he lifted them, and helped them see the joy that could be had in all the little things of life. We've lost a friend and a good man. Life will go on, but differently--best thing we can do is try to put a little Chief Schaub in everything we do--be kind, be dedicated yet easy going, be a good and loyal friend to others. Be happy.

Oh, and if there's any prairy dogs in heaven, beware.

Fair winds and a fallow sea Chief. Stay strong Deb.

    Deb,

On behalf of myself and our 6,200 4N0's I send my deepest regrets. Bill and I both joined the Air Force in 1979, but we did not meet until 1997. For the very short time I had the pleasure of knowing Bill, I was always impressed by his calm easy going demeanor. He had a way of putting folk at ease, even in the most difficult situations. Bill was a truly humble and spiritual man. I will miss him. Deb, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Please don't hesitate to let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

    Deepest Sympathy

He was my Chief, my Superintendent.

He was a strong christian and a loving husband to Deb.

He was a 4N, an IDMT and an old farm boy from Wisconsin. We shared this special kinship.

He was a hunter and a trapper.

He was my mentor, my confidant.

He was a great many things, but mostly, he was my friend.

    I miss you.

I've met so many people in my 21 years of service. Its difficult to remember everyone, but then there are those that leave such a lasting impression that when you hear their name, you immediately say, "I know him, he's such a wonderful person, a great Senior NCO and leader." Chief was one of those people to me. Someone who treated everyone of all ranks with dignity and respect; unassuming, even-tempered and down-to-earth. You couldn't help but smile when you saw him coming. I will so miss him.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Chief Bill Schaub. He was a great Air Force Chief, and a dear friend and mentor to many. Although I had only known Chief Schaub for four short years, I will always be grateful for the opportunity I had to get to know him and work together on so many important issues affecting the Medical Enlisted Force. The Air Force and Air Force Medical Service have lost a true friend and leader.

Deb, on behalf of all of my fellow Medical Chiefs and the Air Force Medical Service Enlisted Corps, I extend to you my heartfelt sympathy. Our collective thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this very sorrowful period.

CMSgt Bill Schaub -- what a wonderful patriot, but more than that what a wonderful friend and human being. I first met Chief back in 1990 at Malmstrom AFB when he was an IDMT at Conrad. We met up again when he moved to Malmstrom as the much loved Group Superintendent in 2004. I have never met a more unassuming individual. It was never about him, it was always about everyone else. His leadership, guidance and friendship have served me well in my job here at HQ AFSPC. I couldn't ask for more of an advocate/ally. Chief, I know the good Lord has a special place in heaven for you. Debbie, stay strong and keep the faith through this most difficult time.

We've lost a great friend. Bill and I were on the HQ USAFE staff together for two years. During that time we had a lot of fun together, including a very memorable Christmas party singing some "modified" carols with enhanced lyrics. In fact, the last time we chatted was about those songs, because he had found the lyrics. I hope he shared them with his Malmstrom family. I know how happy he was to be heading up to Montana, back to the wide open spaces and outdoor life he loved. Thousands of people are better off because of his efforts, and the world is a lesser place without him. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and coworkers.

It's will great sorrow and a heavy heart that I pass on my condolences to the Shaub family. I met Bill and Debbie when they came to Hawaii for Bill's Chief Orientation. Bill was such an open, happy mentoring Chief to me from that time in Hawaii on. We worked together on issues over the phone and email wires, working to make the AF and the AFMS better. He truly has made both MUCH better!
Debbie, the Gilmore family hold you in our thoughts and prayers. We will miss Bill immensely! Dave and Donna Gilmore

Chief Schaub was one of the few people in this Air Force I can truly say I have the utmost respect for. He was a mentor, and a good hearted person. He was one of those people who didn't have ulterior motives for what he did. I couldn't believe it when I saw the e-mail that he had passed away. People like him never get enough time here on earth. Chief was instrumental in getting me a special duty assignment; which led to another enlistment, and 3 more assignments. He will be truly missed.

I am so sorry for your loss...

Debbie--I can't begin to tell you how much my heart hurt when I found out that Bill passed on. It's amazing to feel that way, even when I "know" that Bill took his place in heaven, because he was always such a fine Christ like example for each of us while here on earth.

I couldn't help think about and appreciate Bills friendship everyday over the past 6 years... You see, to this day I still have to answer silly questions about "what's that goofy coffee cup with the cute little sheep on it Chief?" After Bill and I traveled through Europe on PCO SAVs together the rest of the team teased us about having similar roots--because where we come from, "men are men and sheep are scared".... Bill couldn't let that one go--and ended up sending me that cup for my birthday in 2000.

I hope I never break that cup--I always want to remember his wonderful friendship! So Bill, until we meet again--keep a seat warm for me and leave a prairie dog or two for the rest of us.

    God Bless--Mark!

    Dear Deb,

Kay and I were so sad to learn of Bill's passing. Just last week we had corresponded and looked forward to seeing one another at Leesburg in October. Truly a great Chief and one we can all emulate. I would sometimes run into Bill at the chow hall on Ramstein and we would enjoy a lunch together and he was always interested in learning what was happeing out in the field. I used to kid him about loving the northern tier bases the way he did. Our hearts and prayers go out to you, Deb, in your time of grief. We will all miss Bill dearly, but I know he has a special place in your heart that no one can take away.

    Love, Tom and Kay Davis

With Bill’s passing the United States lost a great citizen, the Air Force lost a great airman, and we've lost a great friend.

I’ve known Bill for around twenty years. I met him when he came to Scott in the mid 80’s and we both were assigned to the Emergency Room. He was a true mentor and role model when I was a young airman (And Debbie and I even worked together on 2A prior to that!) When he made MSgt, I recall being awestruck of his rapid rise through the ranks.

One morning we both were coming on duty when we received a call to respond off base to a farmer’s field for a rollover MVA. Bill grabbed the keys to the ambulance and told me to come on. We took off and jumped the call over the still on-duty night shift. While we were caring for the victim on scene he told me, as the MVA had already taken out a good chunk of the bean field, not to step on or damage any more soybean plants than we absolutely had to…we were hurting a farmers livelihood. On our return the night crew was none too pleased we “jumped” their run. He just shrugged his shoulders and told the shift leader “What ya gonna do, send me back to Shemya?” (OK, it was very funny at the time!)

The only thing that pumped him up more than being a Medic was being a Trapper. I remember some time later I was at his house and he was showing me some pelts. He was so enthusiastic and excited as he told his hunting and trapping stories.

The point I’m trying to make about Bill is, he wanted people not only to strive to be their best, but think about the larger implication of each decision and action you take. I think he felt if you rush and cut corners, someone or something is going to get hurt, broken or missed. Years later I truly understood what he meant. Be it caring for a patient in a bean field, hunting and trapping or planning your career, look at the big picture and see just how each one of your actions can affect others.

Debbie, our hearts and thoughts are with you. You know where we’re at if you need anything.

Bill, Happy hunting, and we’ll see you way far away in the back forty, running traps sometime.

    Debbie,

Christina and I are heartbroken for you. Chief did so much for so many and asked absolutely nothing in return but a firm handshake. From our short time at Minot before you left for Germany and our longer time together at Offutt, I was always amazed by Chief's ability to recall a person and know some important detail about their lives that made them feel like they were the most important person to him. He certainly put me at ease and kept me on track on more than one occassion.

Know that you are in our hearts and prayers. We pray the Lord be with you through this time. Heaven is a little richer today now that they have a chief's chief there to help out. God bless.

    With great sympathy,

    Joe and Christina Guzik

There isn't much more I can offer in words of praise or absolute thanks for Bill Schaub. Anyone who knew him, got what they saw, a leader who was committed to his country, his family, and his calling. Bill was never one to shy away from a challenge or see something that was impossible. He always looked for the positive even when he disagreed with something that leadership had decided was necssary to execute. His mentoring was kind and he always had a way to bring even the most disappointing effort back to a positive light. He believed in the best of people and tried in evrything he did to teach those around him. He took his stewardship seriously, but never allowed himself to become bigger then the issue. He was a commander's SNCO, always focused on the mission, but with the feeling that the people came first--take care of them and they will take care of the mission.
We have lost a friend and a great leader. I think we will miss most what we saw as a natural talent and skill--his smile, laugh, demeanor, and personality. We will only now fully appreciate what a tremendous people person he was and the impact he had on building our future airmen now that we don't have him with us. Deb, there is so much more I could say about the wonderful person Bill was, but you already know that. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies with a true sense of thanks and gratitude for sharing your husband with us. We are a better AF because of Bill. For those he touched, he will not easily be forgotten. May you find peace and comfort during this very difficult time. Peace

    Debbie,

I, as everyone else here, was in disbelief when I heard the news about Chief Schaub. My first thoughts were of you and how you were coping.

From the comments I have read and people I have talked to, everyone thought very highly of Chief Schaub. Great man, mentor, friend, loyal, warm hearted, loving husband, just to mention a few of the comments. I agree with them all. He truly touched many lives.

I am so glad you came back for a visit recently and that I got to see you both.

May the many wonderful memories you have help you heal.

Please know that you are in our thoughts here at the 55 MDG.

Chief Schaub, rest in peace. We miss you.

    Deb,
I know one day you will read all of these kind, compassionate expressions of sympathy to you and your family and it will give you a sense of how well Chief was loved and admired by so many in his AF family. We are all stunned by his sudden death, yet grateful we had a chance to see you both just two weeks ago here at Offutt. I also know from a very personal standpoint, having experienced what you now face, that no amount of kind words, acts or deeds at this point can relieve the deep seated pain and agony you are dealing with right now. However, I also know that our heavenly Father knows exactly how much pain you are bearing. I know that if you cast your cares on him, he will carry you through all of this pain and agony, and he will heal your broken heart. May you take comfort in knowing that all who write to you, call you, and send condolences to you, share in your sorrow and grief. May you find peace in knowing that Chief is safe in the arms of God, and that same God is going to comfort and keep you. My prayers are with you.
    Sincerely,

I cannot express in words the disbelief when I heard the news of Chief's passing.

I am glad I was able to see you both a few weeks ago. I am glad I had the experience to work with Chief when he was stationed at Offutt. He was a great leader and friend. It seemed no matter what type of day he was having he was always willing to let me vent, if I needed to.

I was looking through some past email from him this morning and he made a comment what a glory it will be to wake up and be heaven and see Jesus. It makes the loss a little less painful knowing Bill is in heaven and someday we will get to see him again.

He has gone to the great hunting ground.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Chief Schaub gave me the best advice I've ever gotten. When I first arrived at Offutt I was given a date to test for staff. He came to my clinic and wished me the best on my test and said to pray. He told me that that was how he made it to Chief. I took his advice and did more praying than studying I think. I made it.
He was a fantastic human being!

Chief will be deeply missed! I have known him for over a decade. From our time stationed here in Montana in the 80's/90's to our time experiancing the frozen tundra of Alaska at Eielson AFB in the late 90's. To our most time here at Malmstrom, enjoying a pint of Pigs Ass Porter at the Belt Brew Pub. Chief always had the time to talk either about work or our favorite past time hunting. Chief often told the story how he tried killing me one early morning at Eielson; it was 40 below and Chief drug me across base to a meeting; needless to say he never drove any place on base, he always walked. By the time we got to the meeting, I was a frozen popcicle. I had only been signed in at Eielson for one day! Chief was was an avid hunter/outdoorsman; if it was in the woods he either hunted it or trapped it. Bill and Debbie you will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for being a great mentor!

My heart just breaks to be writing here today. Everytime I ran into the Chief we'd talk about home. He and I were born in the same small town in Wisconsin, even delivered by the same doctor! That was a source of conversation for us many times as we marveled at the small world we live in. If I'd known his time here would be this short I would have said so much more. He was always there with a warm "hello", always asking how I was and if I'd been home recently. We often talked about Wisconsin, and where we planned to retire with our families. He was a decent, warm and caring person. He was one whom I'm proud to have known and incredibly sad to say good-bye to. It's much too early for that!

There is a song on the radio now that makes me think of him. It speaks of a man who wants to be remembered as a good husband, neighbor and a friend, but mostly a good man. That was Chief Schaub.

Mrs. Schaub, words fail me. My prayers go out for you at this most difficult time.

Looking over the comments already left here for Chief, his family and friends, it's clear a common thread runs through each... calm, gentle, dedicated. This I think is the Chief to all of us. He made you feel like you were singularly the most important person in the world at any given moment. It wasn’t just empty praise with him, he would look you dead in the eye and tell you how important you were and you knew he meant it. Just hours before his passing he attended the civilian forum, as he left he turned and told us that it was because of people like us that he wasn’t ready to retire. I’ll never forget that.

You look back at your own life and at least for me there are a small handful of people you can count as truly having helped shape who you are as a person, a mentor, a friend. The Chief will be counted in that small elite group for many people.

A Buddhist prayer says in its final sentences, “Let your love flow outward through the universe, to it’s height, it’s depth, it’s broad extent. Strive for this with a one-pointed mind… your life will bring paradise to earth.”. Chief, thanks for the little taste of paradise on earth.

Debbie, I can't begin to say how sorry I am for your loss. But please know that it is a great loss for all who ever met Chief. He had that kind of effect on everyone. He would always meet you with a smile. He was always willing to do whatever it took for anyone who was in need. Chief is the kind of man that we strive to be like, to be the kind of friend, the kind of leader, to take a stand when need be and to also know when to just lend a shoulder to lean on. I will miss him alot. Please know that he was loved very much by so many. May God bless you and your family.

I retired from the AF some 25 years ago and have lived in Great Falls, MT, for over 35 years now. About a dozen years ago I was visiting with a sick Aunt in upstate NY and she mentioned to me that she thought that I had a cousin living in Montana and that her husband was in the AF. She thought that their last name was Schaub. Well, locating them was but about two questions away to the right people. They were at a detachment out of Conrad, Montana, 60 miles from here. I called and Bill's wife Debbie knew for sure that I was selling something or using it. She agreed to meet me for breakfast, in a very public location with lots of people around. We really hit it off and a forever relationship was fixed right then and there. I was so anxious to meet Bill and she agreed to bring him by our home, she got brave in a hurry. First impression of Bill was a forever one! He was so sincere and personal that I wondered if we weren't brothers, for he sure made me feel as such. We have said grace and broke bread together many, many times through these few fast years that we have known each other. Myself, being retired from the AF,and my wife were the target board for a lot of questions through the years. He always wanted to know what civilian life was like, though we figured out very shortly that he was not ready to retire as he so loved his AF job and he had to be doing something. Plus we all knew that the AF Chief pay was pretty darn good, though I knew he earned every penny.
As I meet those who had a personal relationship with Bill I can see the pride in their face to have known him. To his family, friends, and co-workers (who all very rapidly became his friends), I know! We love you all!! God Loves You..............

    Deb,

As I found out about Bill's passing I had to pull back all the memories...the first three things that came to mind were...

A patient mentor and friend for many years (since you were in Geramany)

He loved to hunt and trap as I do...always an hour or two of conversation on that...

And he never missed a chance to work you and all of his love for Bill's "Deb" into every conversation...

Bill is one of those guys that you would be hard pressed to find a single individual that would say a less then kind word about him...The country and our world has lost a great patriot and man...

My thoughts and prayers are with you...

I am one of Billy's nieces from Hustler, WI. It gives our family great pleasure to read all the wonderful things everyone has to say about him!! We knew he was a super person, but it eases our minds to know how highly his friends and coworkers thought of him.
Being so close in age to his nieces and nephews, we were all very close to him. We thought of him as more a brother than an uncle!
I remember when Billy & David had a St Bernard. The dog kept chasing the milk man down the road. Billy decided to tie the dog up to the picnic table. Well the next day the picnic table went down the road with the dog chasing the milk man! I am glad to hear that Billy's problem solving skills have improved!
A month or so ago Billy and Debbie both emailed me some very kind and encouraging words! I will treasure and cherish these words forever!!Debbie, thank you for that!
I miss him already and have an ache in my heart!!
I am very proud to say he was my uncle!

Chief Schaub is my inspiration. He touched so many peoples lives and I believe that he knew that he was making a change. I am in the military to this day because of his efforts and many of the people that he had influence on. I found out today on a TDY the loss that will be shared on so many levels. I wish I had the opportunity to tell him one more time how much I appreciated his tireless efforts and for helping an airman he barely knew to maintain his opportunity to serve in the U.S. military. I want to say to his family that I owe them thanks as well because of the support I know he received. I am forever grateful and a better NCO/ Airman for receiving his guidance and sicereity. To apply in my career and life his example would make a better society overall. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and my heart and condolences to the family he loved and was supported by.

Hearing the news of Chief Schaub's death came as a tremendous blow to me. I worked with Chief at USAFE/SG where he was the CEMI (Chief, Medical Enlisted Issues). At the time, I was a SSgt. He was an excellent mentor and friend. Once, when we were TDY together in Spangdahlem I noticed he took the opportunity to meet every Airman he could. He would introduce himself and offer any personal or professional assistance he could. We ate breakfast together every morning that week and he gave me some of the best mentoring I've ever had. Chief wanted me to be successful and encouraged me all the time. I was such an honor to have worked with him. I last say Chief in the fall of 05. I was TDY to Sheppard. As I was checking into billeting I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and there was Chief with that big smile on his face. I had recently received a commission as an MSC. He touched my BDU collar and said "Looks great, sir" and gave me a wink. I will truly miss Chief Schaub. He was a consummate professional in every way. He genuinely cared about the people for whom and with whom he worked. I'm proud to have worked with him and to have known him. I know I'm a better Airman for it.

This afternoon when I found out about Chief, my heart sank as I tried to rationalize what I had just heard. Many wonderful memories came flowing back into mind as I thought about my many years at Offutt, and the best ones with Chief Schaub as my MDOS Superintendent. As a fellow Wisconsinite from Chippewa Falls, a town not many know about, he and I spoke about how wonderful the state was and how we wanted to end up back there. We laughed about cheese curds, hunting, along with many other subjects that randomly came up.
Chief always spoke with such wisdom and understanding that could only come from an individual that really cared. He was a light and an inspiration in my career, and helped me see what I truely could be.
Mrs. Schaub, please know how much your husband changed many young airmans' lives, inpired junior NCO's, and was a mentor to all enlisted ranks. My heart and sympathy go out to you and your families during this time. What he stood for and what he was all about will never be forgotten. God Bless!

    Dear Deb,
We were so sorry to hear about Bill. He has touched so many lives and I will never forget seeing him at Eielson and remembering old times together and being there when he made Chief and of course meeting you, the love of his life. Deb, please take good care of yourself and remember!

Chief was a great mentor, a great leader and a great man. Never raising his voice to any troop but instead lifting the troops up and raising them up to be all that they should be. I thank him for his leadership and guidence he gave me. Thanks Chief, thank you so much.

I worked with and knew Chief while he was stationed at Offutt. I, and my family, are better people because Bill and Deb crossed our paths. "Trapper Smerf" and I shared many great stories and good times both on and off duty. Bill was a great Christian mentor. This world is a darker place without him. Our prayers go out to Deb...our doors are alway open.

    Deb,
I am so sorry for your loss or should i say our loss. I have never met you however I feel as if I know you... the Chief and I shared a ride from Italy to Ramstein and I will never forget his kind words and understanding nature. Even after he left Germany he was always a e-mail or phone call away and offered great advice and encouragement. He would alwys tell me to do the best I could in the place where I was and to not let the turkeys get me down. I cannot express the sorrow I feel for you and your family however I can say that the AF family grieves the loss of a great man. Know that every life he touched was forever changed and we are all better to have known him.

    Godspeed Chief.

Wow, I stumbled upon this blog somehow when searching for something else related to the Air Force Medical Service. I instantly recognized the topic of "CMSgt Bill Schaub" even though it's been four years since I last saw him. It also appears that it's been two years since his passing, and it was sad for me to read this.

I served as an enlisted 4N0 at Offutt from '02-'04. Chief Schaub really tried to persuade me to become an IDMT, and I really wanted to, however my waiver got declined because at that time they were not accepting SrA. At my request he then authored my recommendation letter to become an Aerovac Tech. In part because of him I went on to enjoy a lot of success in that realm and it catapulted me to my current status as an MSC officer.

Chief Schaub was definitely looking out for me. I still have his letter of recommendation. I wouldn't be where I am today without outstanding SNCOs such as himself.

Godspeed Chief, you made a difference!
